Being at the forefront of communication, they decided to invest in the development of the film industry and studied the Hollywood sound film production model. In 1931, they built and founded in our city Lumiton, the first modern film studios in Latin America, giving birth to sound films in our country. Here took place the Golden Age of our cinematographic history: the home and the beginning of legendary actors and filmmakers (such as Luis Sandrini, Mirtha Legrand, Mecha Ortiz, Juan Carlos Thorry, Susana Freyre, Olga Zubarry, Niní Marshall and Hugo del Carril). Lumiton stood out with Argentina’s first argumentative sound film, “Los Tres Berretines”.

Some of the most outstanding directors of our country started at Lumiton: MANUEL ROMERO with his popular comedies; FRANCISCO MUGICA and his sophisticated dramas and romantic comedies; CARLOS HUGO CHRISTENSEN, precursor of erotic cinema and author of successful films, to name only three greats whose filmography stands out. In mid-1960, the first Argentine sound film directed by a woman, VLASTA LAH, produced by Lumiton, was filmed. The studios remained active until 1966, but the political and historical context was no longer favorable for this type of cinema. However, it managed to remain standing and was declared a National Historic Monument. With a strong policy aimed at preserving cultural heritage as a driver of the future, the city acquired it in 2005 long after its closure and transformed it into a museum. In 2015, the “Lumiton Project” added the audiovisual factory it is today. The old house that remains of Lumiton is our headquarters and gives life to everything we do.

Committed to the preservation of cultural heritage, the city has two significant archives. The Lumiton Archive, one of the few specialized film archives in the country, focuses on the preservation, conservation, digitization and restoration of film heritage. It comprises a Film Archive with 1,250 vital films in various formats (35 mm, 16 mm, 8 mm, Super 8 mm, and more) since 1935, a Photo Archive with 3,165 photographs, lobby cards and 409 film posters since 1933, and a library with 1,111 books on film. In addition, the archive has film programs from 1930 to 1990 and 307 still and film cameras from the 1930s.

In addition, Lumiton’s dedicated research department explores new preservation techniques and conducts activities to raise awareness of the importance of archiving.

Another archive is the Digital Historical Archive located in another historic site, “Torre Ader”, dedicated to collecting, organizing and preserving historical documentation (including photographs, newspaper articles and manuscripts) from the 18th century to the present day.

With a strong belief in the transformative tool of culture, both archives are available online and free of charge worldwide. The city has two public educational institutes with free access: the “Instituto de Cine Contemporáneo”, a tertiary education institution with 40 years of experience and a Higher Technicature in Film, TV and Video Production with a digital editing island, an auditorium and all the necessary technical equipment for filmmaking, where more than 350 students attend. It also offers extracurricular courses such as screenwriting, directing, wardrobe, etc., all taught by professionals with extensive experience. The second institute, “El Mate”, is the first film school for children and teenagers. Founded in 1987, it was a pioneer in its field with a working method for comprehensive training in art and communication, where each participant is free to express themselves, learn and develop audiovisual projects.
