PIA HERNANDEZ

Pía Hernández is a pianist and composer born in 1989 in the city of Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. She is actively involved in the Buenos Aires jazz scene, performing on numerous stages throughout the city with various jazz groups. Her performances include venues such as the International Jazz Festival of Buenos Aires, CCK, Usina de Arte, Haroldo Conti Cultural Center, Virasoro, Thelonious, Bebop, Prez, among others.

Pía Hernández’s Bio
Pía Hernández graduated in 2010 from the Popular Music program at the Institute of Music of SAdeM, and in 2015 from the Jazz program at the Manuel de Falla Superior Conservatory. She has also pursued independent training in jazz piano with Paula Shocron, Ernesto Jodos, and Guillermo Romero, ensemble and free improvisation with Rodrigo Domínguez and Juan Pablo Arredondo, jazz improvisation with Juan Cruz de Urquiza, and classical music with pianists Susana Kasakoff and Malena Levín. She is a two-time recipient of grants from the Fondo Nacional de las Artes (National Fund for the Arts) to participate in the III and VI Encounters of Improvisation and Composition. Selected for residencies at the Usina de Arte and CCK with Marilyn Crispell (USA), Tim Berne (USA), and Louis Sclavis (USA), having the opportunity to share stages with these figures. Chosen to participate in the Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music (Canada) and SIM (USA) residencies.

She has been recognized multiple times in the New York magazine “All About Jazz.” She leads her own group with three released albums (Lilith as a trio and Relicario as a quintet, and the current La Emperatriz as a trio with Lucas Goicoechea as a guest). Additionally, she participates in various projects, from duos, trios, quintets, sextets, and even big bands. With some of them, she has released recorded materials, such as with El devenir del Río, Julián Mekler sextet, Juan Pablo Arredondo trio, Ignacio Szulga quintet, Joaquín Muro quartet, Belén López sextet, Nebbia-Sanjurjo-Hernández Trio, Nicotina es Primavera, Mujeres Improvisando, La Big Band de la Facultad de Derecho, La Big Nant, La Big Band del Conservatorio Manuel de Falla, among others. She also works as an educator in the Jazz program at the Conservatorio Superior Manuel de Falla and at the Escuela de Música Contemporánea (EMC). Some of Pía Hernández’s compositions have been published in the Real Book Argentino.
